"The Fly" Title Redesign

Last semester at Kendall I chose to redesign the title sequence for the 1986 version of The Fly to try out the school's DSLR camera. The titles themselves were created manually by filming printed transparencies that were squirted with water. The idea was that the names and words would melt and dissolve like a fly's meal. I found some old contact paper (it's basically a black sticker) in a drawer and put it to use on some little wooden plaques we had laying around. With an exacto blade I cut shapes out of the sticker to reveal the wood underneath. These are some designs I've made freehand.

Painted the guy up and brought him into Photoshop. I couldn't find the pen for my tablet so I wasn't able to draw directly on top of him. I'll do that sometime soon just for fun though and post the results. I messed with him and decided to replace the boring black background of the original photo with a taxidermied display of Africa. It ended up looking like a photo of a cartoon Uncle I never had. I am pleased.

So I drew this little guy after coming across some ridiculous Knife commercials on youtube. To show you the strength and sharpness of the knife they have middle aged chunky dudes stab pieces of meat hanging from the ceiling, bags filled with meat, entire deceased pigs, etc. Pretty ridiculous. So I watched some of these videos, laughed my ass off and noticed that one chunky guy in particular seemed to REALLY be going for it and he had some terrible one liners after he would cut something. Such as " Huh, I wouldn't want to be that pig...".

This guy is awesomely bad and should probably have his own low rent action tv show ala MacGyver.

Ashley Wood Paint Study

On the top is my attempt at a digital painting copy of an Ashley Wood painting.

On the bottom is the actual painting.

Done in about an hour and twenty minutes.

I missed out on a lot of the dark blue in the shadows

Some proportional issues and the lighter figure's hips weren't nailed down as much as I would have liked.

I think the light values on the white figure worked out fairly well, in the back and shoulders.

the right arm of the darker figure came out pretty good.

So much to learn, but I did start to get a grasp on laying out the composition with almost a silhouette of tone and then working on top of that to build the figures.

I also learned I don't know much about cool/warm color choices.

Realllly liking the loose impressionistic style though, and I'm pretty happy with this study.

I would give it a 60/100

The Chupacabra and the Trapper

People think that using traps on animals is inhumane. They say that the animals lay suffering alone in the wilderness. They’ll chew their legs off to get away. They’ll thrash and struggle so much that their bones will fracture and split, tear through muscle and skin. Oh, but there are so many different types of wicked traps aren’t there? Not all are simply metal or rope. In fact some traps are completely invisible, unnoticeable… at least until you find yourself helplessly ensnared, with no chance of escape. FRANK- These god damn dogs! Well they’re not my dogs. They’re nobody’s dogs actually. Wild dogs that eat chickens, and get into garbage’s. Most of em have mange and are just spreadin’ disease around.

I do my best to catch em. To get these filthy dogs away from this place. I trap em.

Bullets and guns takes too long, you gotta sit out in the woods or wherever you find yourself and wait with your dick in your hands until you see somethin’ or hear somethin’ then you sit still…..you clench every cell in your fuckin’ body and you hope to god that thing hasn’t seen or smelt you already and took off. On the chance it hasn’t seen you or smelt you though, then you pull the trigger.

That’s right you pull the trigger and then whaddaya got? Hm? One dead fucking dog, 2 hours lost, and your body’s so sore from sittin OUTSIDE that you’ve gotta go back INSIDE and sit some more!

Nope. I trap now. No sense in sitting outside and waiting when I can just set up some bait, some traps and wait inside. I stay up late to check the traps, stay up really late, sometimes I don’t sleep at all. I go out to check the traps around five in the morning, if there’s anything in em I finish it off there and bring it back home.

I don’t have any neighbors where I live. Texas is a pretty big state and keeping to myself is pretty easy to do here. I’m not all that into the community, but I do drive into town to pick up certain things every now and then. In fact I bought my first traps from town. They all asked what I was hunting of course and when I told em I was going after those god damn dogs that were eating my chickens and turkeys they didn’t quite know what to say. They thanked me after I told em there wouldn’t be any more of these dogs left once I was finished. When I drove out of town I could see them making weird faces at me in the mirror of my truck. Those fucking ungrateful bastards, no thanks for what I’m doing.

It doesn’t bother me now though. I know where the dogs live. I know where they sleep. I know their favorite place to take a fucking piss!

My name is Owen Garritt. I’m a reporter, I’m here because some of the people in town told me you trap animals in this area. I just flew into town to investigate a story.

Well Mr. Wolf I believe that there is an unknown species of animal living in this area that nobody has ever been able to document. May I come in?

There have been reports from the locals of their livestock being attacked and killed by some strange animal. The animals all have the same bite patterns on them.

OPENS DOOR

Yeah. Wild dogs, They’ve eaten my chickens before, they kill their killers.

No I’m certain it isn’t dogs.

Of course it’s the dogs you dumbass! Who are you anyway? I’ve been out here hunting these dogs down for years, I know what they can do to other animals okay, they’re vicious evil things. Who are you anyway? Some reporter? Garritt from Dallas or something? Fuck off.

Mr. Wolf the animals were drained of their blood. And I’m from San Antonio not Dallas

Just listen to me, the cattle I saw yesterday were completely bled out except there wasn’t any blood on the ground or anywhere else besides at the site of the bites on each animal. I’m not here because of the cows though Mr. Wolf.

Whatever did that to the cows apparently has moved on to people. A family of four was found dead in town. They were killed by the same animal. The Chupacabra they say.

Are you going to come with me? I’ll show you I said.

Listen, I just wanted to come over here to ask you if you’d seen anything out of the ordinary along your trap lines. Any weird animal behavior or unexplained happenings?

Nobody sees them for what they really are…. Let’s get in my truck and I’ll take you to my traps. It’s about five anyway.

Now listen Frank. I may be a reporter, but I’m a reporter from Texas and that means I carry a gun too. I aint about to get murdered in the middle of nowhere by you and left for dead in the woods. You do anything crazy and I’m not calling the police to help my ass, you know what I’m saying?

THEY GET IN TRUCK AND DRIVE DEEP INTO A FOREST

I’ve heard tales about this Chupacabra before, but this time it feels different to me. I mean the way those bodies were sucked dry. There’s no animal I know of that could do something like that. There’s always been stories of the Chupacabra. The goatsucker. Really gruesome the way those folks went out actually. I guess I’m just realizing it now you know. I just flew here as soon as I got the news this evening because it has to be the Chupacabra. I’m finally going to find it!

The dogs. When I lost my first chicken I sat out the next night with my rifle and waited for them to come back. It took a while, but when they came I just watched. They came silently, glowing eyes bobbing in the darkness. They didn’t come in a pack you know. Not like a school of fish, more like a bubbling chaotic shadow. When they were on the chickens the night erupted in a frenzy, the dogs teared at the fence while the chickens whirled and screeched. I sat there and watched. They rushed in and took the birds by the throats, ripping at them viciously, it was so noisy, so bloody. That was the night that I saw them for what they are. After the chickens had been massacred they left. The dogs and I were the only things on the planet that even knew what had happened.

THEY PULL UP TO A CLEARING AND PARK

We’re here now. There should be something in one of these traps.

THEY GET OUT AND APPROACH THE FIRST TRAP. NOTHING. THE SECOND TRAP. NOTHING. THE THIRD TRAP THERE IS A SNARL AND WHIMPER

FRANK SHOOTS THE DOG IN THE HEAD. IT’S KNOCKED TO THE GROUND.

Jesus Christ! You’re a fucking lunatic! I can’t believe I’m out here right now. This is bad, I’m fucked I’ so fucked.

THERE IS A RUSTLE IN THE BUSHES

OWEN PULLS OUT HIS CAMERA, RAISING IT TO GET A SHOT

FRANK IS CLOSE TO THE SOUND AND SEES 2 GLOWING RED EYES AND GASPS

OWEN FLASHES A PICTURE

FRANK SEES IN THAT INSTANT THE FORM OF AN ODDLY SHAPED HUNCHED HUMANOID CREATURE. IT’S EYES IGNITE FROM THE FLASH AND FRANK CAN MAKE OUT A MOUTH OF SHARP FANGS. THE BEAST FLEES IMMEDIATELY

HOLY SHIT! What was that Frank? Did you see that thing? Oh my god man! That was it! That was the Chupacabra! HAHAHA! What was it eating over there? It looks like it was eating something. What is that Frank?

FRANK RAISES HIS SHOTGUN TO THE BACK OF OWEN’S HEAD AND PULLS THE TRIGGER. OWEN’S HEAD EXPLODES AND HIS BODY TUMBLES DOWN TO THE DIRT.

I killed that dog. They eat each other you stupid fuck. That’s MY bait pile. Now it’s time to get you back home and make another one.

DRAGS OWEN’S BODY INTO THE TRUCK BESIDE HIM AND DRIVES HOME

This is the opening scene from a project Matt Schrader and I have been intensely developing, we're just now getting the ideas into animation.

Basically the story is about a primitive 'human' his bear/antelope friend and their encounters with Evolution as we know it.

Imagine all the different life forms before they were weeded out by natural selection. This is the story of two such beings who seem incapable of adapting and carrying on their genes...

I think it'll probably feel very similar to Ren and Stimpy . Which would be fantastic.

So this is most of the elements together in photoshop, haphazardly assembled.

I was able to get some nice effects with simple adjustments to the image, but my instructor brought up the point that maybe my dark lines are being too washed out.

I was purposely trying to 'blur' things that are farther away to mimic a focus effect, but apparently it's not working right?

Oh well, more posts to come.

He got a bite and pulled up the gnarly sea beast Jormungard.Thor has mad beef with the sea serpent so he lifted his bonified hammer to wail that fool when Hymir had a nervous breakdown and cut the line...

I'm using a mix of watercolors and acrylics. I really like how the watercolors show a bit of the wood through the paint and how the dark edges get pulled into the paint.
